I have been a little quiet this week, as we had a busy weekend away, and came home with a tummy bug 🙁
It definitely seems to be going around Melbourne, with lots of adults and kids experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue, aches, sore throats, and headaches. Have you been stuck down??
So I’ve been boosting us all up with some probiotics, herbal anti-microbials, and nutrients.
The best probiotic for tummy bugs is actually a type of beneficial yeast called Sacchromyces Boullardi – SB for short. It crowds out the pathogenic bacteria and reduces the severity of the infection. Also if you’ve ever had a gut bug and your stools have taken a while to normalise again – this one is brilliant.
Herbal anti-microbials work on viral, bacterial and parasitic bugs so they’re a great way to kill of the bad, while sparing the good. Most of the great ones are in the practitioner only range which means you do need an appointment, but to help you out while you’re stuck at home I offer short acute consults, online, and can ship supplements to you for next day delivery*.
Depending on your symptoms – for me nausea is a big one with this bug, Iberogast is great. It is such a great herbal formula that is effective for almost all gut issues, and readily available at Health Shops and Pharmacies. It is shown to reduce nausea within 20 minutes.
Ginger is another great herb for nausea – drunk fresh as a tea, or added to food. I also carry a small dropper bottle of ginger drops with me at all times as you never know when it will come in handy.
Peppermint tea is helpful if you have bloating or intestinal discomfort – but it can worsen reflux so use accordingly.
We’ve also been boosting our gut healing nutrients – like Zinc, Vitamin A, and Vitamin D through a yummy powder that my daughter thinks is juice ?
If your gut feels inflamed and sore you can also use some lovely soothing powders that contain things like Slippery Elm, Marshmallow (the herb!), glutamine, and more. I have all of these in my online dispensary so they are only a click away. The added benefit of these is they are often a food in and of themselves – they’re nutritive to us and out gut bacteria so if you have a low appetite they’re a great way to provide some nourishment.
What else do you use to help get over it faster?? I’d love to hear your home remedies!
