Naturopathically we are taught that the optimal time between children is two years, and this has nothing to do with age gap.
It is the amount of time it takes a women’s body to recover from pregnancy and childbirth. Physically? Perhaps – many women experience aches, pains, prolapses, and even fractures during and after birth, but more so – nutritionally. This is often called Post Natal Depletion.
During pregnancy, and breastfeeding the baby takes so many of the mothers nutrients to build their cells, grow their skeleton, and form their brain.
The implications of this are varied – fatigue, post natal depression, immune and thyroid dysfunction, and even osteoporosis. I am now two years post partum, and find that I am not needing to lie down every time my daughter naps. I have energy to make dinner, and clean up, and I have more energy to play with my daughter.
Is this because I started a new herb mix? Or took my low iron status seriously? Perhaps. But this feels different. Is there anything that could be done earlier? For sure! I took a great multi while breastfeeding, I chowed down the fish oil tablets – for my own mental health, and my daughters brain development, and I used B vitamins instead of coffee (which hates me) to give me energy.
Does this mean I don’t want to sleep in on the weekend?? Hell no. I think I will always enjoy staying in bed as long as possible! But I don’t get so emotional and exhausted at the thought of how long the day will be after another early wake up. This is my form of self care. I sometimes listen to a mindful meditation on the app Insight Timer before getting up to face the day – and find it helps immensely, other days I read facebook, and hope my husband will bring me a cup of tea!
I once heard another mum say that she had the energy other women want. At the time I was so jealous and curious! How?! And now I feel like I am going to be able to say that soon! Can you?
If you want the energy other mums have – come and see me! Let’s energised together. I recently wrote a post about my approach to mum fatigue, and how I can help you.
This month I am running a 2 for 1 promotion – when you book an appointment, and prioritise your own health – you will receive a free appointment for one of your children! This is a saving of $97! The appointment can be online or face to face so wherever you are, get in touch!
This is an area I am so passionate about as I have been there, I know how hard it is when you aren’t able to stop, and rest, you have to keep going for someone else – a gorgeous little person who doesn’t understand the meaning of tired.
